LGBAC Seeking Symphonic Band Music Director

New York City’s Lesbian & Gay Big Apple Corps seeks a part-time Music Director/Conductor for its Symphonic Band, beginning July 1, 2016. The Music Director coordinates the artistic operation of the ensemble. The Symphonic Band performs two major concerts a year, as well as additional performances in parks and community venues. It rehearses Monday evenings during the fall and spring seasons at the Julia Richman Educational Complex in New York City.

The Music Director/Conductor works in consultation with the Board of Directors, Program Services Director, and the Artistic Production Committee to program performances that promote the organization’s mission, builds community through artistic expression, and creates quality entertainment that pleases, educates and challenges members and audiences to grow.

A stipend is attached to the position.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Conduct concerts and rehearsals
  • Supervise the work of assistant, associate and/or guest conductor(s), and section leaders. Collaborate with the band program services team and the librarian to ensure productive rehearsals
  • Chair the Artistic Production Committee to choose upcoming concert programming
  • Attend monthly Board meetings and provide regular updates. Collaborate with the Board to develop and plan seasonal concerts and rehearsal schedules and to communicate artistic decisions and direction to the membership
  • Coordinate the creation and development of innovative and diverse programs and the selection of repertoire that meets the goals set forth in LGBAC’s mission and board initiatives
  • Participate with the Board of Directors in fundraising efforts, outreach to the LGBTQ community, outreach to other organizations, and promote a positive public image of the Lesbian & Gay Big Apple Corps ensembles
  • Recruit guest artists and guest conductors
  • Perform other similar and related duties, as directed by the Board

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Three or more years experience in a music-related field/profession. Bachelor’s or graduate degree in music or related fields preferred
  • Significant musical leadership talent and abilities, mastery of at least one instrument, a record of musical performance and conducting experience, and knowledge in music theory and composition
  • Comprehensive knowledge of symphonic band repertoire, literature, and styles
  • Evidence of rehearsal management skills with an ability to facilitate effective and enjoyable rehearsals that meet the musical, instructional and social needs of both amateur and professional musicians
  • Basic knowledge of nonprofit organizations and operating within a budget
  • Effective writing and public speaking skills. Strong interpersonal skills and an ability to promote teamwork and collegiality in an all-volunteer group

ABOUT THE BIG APPLE CORPS

The Lesbian & Gay Big Apple Corps was founded in 1979 as a community band and has continued to develop and grow over the past 37 years into a 90-piece marching band and 100-member symphonic ensemble. Symphonic Band members represent a broad range of musical abilities from seasoned musicians and music educators to individuals picking up an instrument for the first time in years. Our community is made up of people from all parts of the LGBTQ community, as well as straight allies. While primarily we are in search of a Music Director who will continue to grow, encourage, inspire, and educate our group musically, we also are seeking a candidate with a passion to champion the cause of the LGBTQ community.
