Philadelphia Freedom Band presents Transformation
Sunday, January 14 at 3 PM
Philadelphia Freedom Band presents our annual winter concert TRANSFORMATION: Music inspired by change. It is free and open to the public, though donations and/ or participation in our raffle is highly encouraged! Light refreshments are provided as well.
A note from Artistic Director Hayley Varhol:
This season’s theme is the idea of TRANSFORMATION. We’ll be representing characters from literature whose stories revolve around a major life change: Cinderella, Superman, Beauty and the Beast, and the folkloric Firebird. You’ll hear from Robert Jager, a composer who transformed a stately march and a delicate waltz into flat-footed, lopsided curiosities. We’ll paint with sound the delicate descent from daylight into night, with the Bryant’s lush composition, “Dusk.” I believe our greatest challenge this season has been to put our own mark on a piece that confronts a different kind of darkness—the darkness within. Since this concert falls on MLK weekend, we’ll be performing a haunting tribute to King’s life of work in shifting the toxic paradigms associated with racism. But fear not—we’ll find the spiritual antidote we need in the hope, redemption, and transcendent beauty of Strauss’s “Death and Transfiguration.” I hope you’ll join us for a sonically moving and spiritually enriching Sunday afternoon!
