Dance-Along Nutcracker® 2015 – The Nutcracker of Oz!

SAN FRANCISCO (Nov. 30, 2015) – The San Francisco Lesbian/Gay Freedom Band (SFLGFB) will present the 30th annual Dance-Along Nutcracker® on Dec. 12 and 13 at Yerba Buena Center for the Arts at 701 Mission St., San Francisco, CA. This year’s fun and zany production is entitled: “The Nutcracker of Oz!” As one of San Francisco’s most celebrated, off-beat holiday events the 2015 Dance-Along Nutcracker® will see an audience of over 1,500, across four shows. “The Nutcracker of Oz” will take the audience on a wild adventure when a twister carries Clara and her dog Fritz over the rainbow to the Land of Oz.

Using wit, artistry and ingenuity, SFLGFB has created an unforgettable show that has blended Tchaikovsky’s classic fairy tale with a unique adaptation of the timeless story of Oz. Under the baton of Artistic Director Pete Nowlen, the Band will blend original scores from Tchaikovsky’s Nutcracker Suite with “Ozesque” favorites from the 1939 cinema classic, “The Wizard of Oz,” and 1974 and 2003 stage productions, “The Wiz” and “Wicked.” For select songs, the flashing “Dance-Along” sign signals the
audience to tug their tutus on and pour onto the dance floor to pirouette beneath the spotlights with the cast.

The show stars Donna Sachet as the Wicked Witch, Joe Wicht (a.k.a. Trauma Flintstone) as the Lion, Leigh Crow as the Wizard, Uncle Drosselmeyer, Mr. Stahlbaum and the Doorman, Zelda Kozonofski as Clara, Flynn DeMarco as the Scarecrow and Ruby Vixen as Glinda. The delightful, whimsical story was co-created and written by Heidi Beeler and Flynn DeMarco. Artistic Director Pete Nowlen assures a captivating show: “combining the magic of Oz with the Nutcracker offers incredible theatrical and musical opportunities – not to mention bringing together two sets of the most beautiful and iconic music of all time!”

Numerous San Francisco businesses have rallied to support this unique show; media sponsors and corporate partners include: San Francisco Bay Times/Betty’s List, KOFY TV /Cable 13, iHeart stations – Pride Radio, Big 103.7, Star 101.3, Talk 910/KKSF AM, Parents’ Press and Brio Financial Group.

This extraordinary production started in 1985 as a fundraiser targeting primarily the LGBT community and has evolved into SFLGFB’s signature event with an audience that is 70% families with children. The Dance-Along Nutcracker® truly exemplifies San Francisco Lesbian/Gay Freedom Band’s mission which is to promote LGBT visibility and build bridges among communities through public performance.

This casual (no formal ballet attire required) show is priced affordably; tickets range from $18 (children) to $30 (adults) offering senior and student discounts at $22. Value-packed “Friends and Family Ticket Packages” are available for groups of four or more. All proceeds benefit the San Francisco Lesbian/Gay Freedom Band, a 501(c)3 nonprofit.

Full of impromptu delight and hilarious surprises, the Dance-Along Nutcracker® is sure to awaken the “inner Sugar Plum Fairy” in anyone and is a deserving spectacle for even the most ardent wallflower. For more information, visit DanceAlongNutcracker.org.
